A Scottish Gaelic man had a basic name that indicated who his father was, usually by his given name, that is, his first name. His name in Gaelic did not say anything at all about what clan he belonged to! Any name generated below could be the name of a member of the Campbell clan, the MacDonald clan, the MacLeod clan, or any other Scottish Gaelic clan of the era. Medieval and sixteenth century Scottish Gaels apparently simply did not use inherited family surnames like modern surnames in Gaelic.
