As yet, no pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic examples of the name have been found.
Reference to the wife of King MacBeth (lived c. 1005-57) from 13th century notitiae in the Register of the Priory of St. Andrews which "profess to be compiled from 'an old book written in the ancient tongue of the Scots'" (Gouldesbrough, 154):
"Machbet filius Finlach ... et Gruoch filia Bodhe, Rex et Regina Scottorum ..." (Gouldesbrough, 156)
"Macbeth son of Finlach and Gruoch daughter of Bodhe, King and Queen of Scots, ..." (Gouldesbrough, 156)
