As yet, no pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic examples of the name have been found written in standard Gaelic orthography.
As yet, no pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic examples of the name have been found in documents written in Gaelic but using Scots orthography.
In a discussion of the place name <Forgandenny>, near Perth, Watson (381) says "The second part here is <Ethne>, the name of St. Columba's mother and many others. Ferchard, earl of Strathearn, and his wife 'Ethen' endowed the church of St. Cattan of Aberruthven with tithes and land before 1171,[1] and it may be this lady's name which is attached to Forgan here. The personal name Gille Ethueny, 'Ethne's lad,' 1246 (Chart. Lind.) occurring in Perthshire rather indicates, however, that Ethne is here a saint's name." The citation [1] is to Charters of Inchaffray, p. lviii. Assuming this citation is to a charter, the quoted Ethen is almost certainly from a Latin document.
