Pre-1600 Scottish Gaelic Evidence (from documents written using Gaelic orthography)

In the Beaton Letter, written in Gaelic circa 1593-6, the chief of the MacLean clan refers to himself in the body of the letter as "L<oc>hl(oinn) <M>ac <Mh>ic Giolla Eoin" (in an oblique case after "<o>") and signs himself “Misi Lochloinn Mac Giolla Eoin” [Beaton]. (Editorial conventions for these quotes: "angular brackets indicate reconstructed text where the manuscript is damaged, round ones contractions whose interpretation is open to question, and square ones editorial additions." [Beaton]).
