This book is mainly of value for it's illustrations. The text is indifferent, sometimes even innaccurate. (For reliable books on Scottish history, see the Scottish Medieval Bibliography.) Although it has many useful illustrations for the study of medieval and early modern Scottish clothing, these are mixed among 19th and 20th century illustraions that purport to be of medieval and early modern events but which are not always clearly identified as modern productions. Caution is advised. Care must be taken to establish whether an illustration is a contemporary work or a modern invention.
Depictions
- pp. 2-3 Culloden, a painting by David Morier 18th Century (4 Jun 2001)
- p. 14 Pictish Symbol Stone in Angus
- p. 17 Great Seal of King William the Lion 12th-13th Century
- p. 17 Great Seal of King Alexander II 13th Century
- p. 17 Great Seal of King Alexander III 13th Century
- p. 19 MS Illustration showing John Balliol & Edward I of England 14th Century
- p. 20 Royal Seal of King John Balliol 13th Century
Modern or Otherwise Untrustworthy Depictions (Ignore Them!)
- p. 1, "The religious reformer Andrew Melville preaching to James VI in 1584"
This does not appear to be a contemporary drawing, and so is not a reliable source of information about 16th century clothing.
- p. 13, "A sixteenth century impression of a Pictish warrior ready for battle."
While this is a 16th century drawing, it should be noted that 16th century Scots had even less information about the Picts that we do today, and so this drawing is not a reliable source of information about Pictish appearances.
- p. 16, "The Battle of the Standard, ... in 1138 ..."
This appears to be a modern drawing, and so is not a reliable source of information about 12th century clothing.
- p. 21, "Wallace's stunning victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297. ..."
This appears to be a modern drawing, and so is not a reliable source of information about 13th century clothing.
